Sono ragni di taglia media, il più grosso è mwdgStiphidium facetum che non supera gli 8 centimetri di mwealegspan (lunghezza del corpo comprese le zampe). La maggior parte delle specie è di colore marrone a chiazze e gambe lunghe.

Costruiscono ragnatele di forma simile a tende, orizzontali, sotto le pietre.

La maggior parte delle specie vive in mwgqAustralia e in mwggNuova Zelanda. L'eccezione è il genere mwgwIschaela: mwhqIschaela incerta nel mwhwMadagascar e mwiaIschaela longiceps nell'isola mwigMauritiuscite-ref-stiphidiidae-1-0[1].
